Gary Gilpin Obituary

Gary Dayne. Gilpin, 81, of Hooker, Oklahoma went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. Gary was born in Grand Island, Nebraska on January 30, 1939 to Oral and Lillian (Williams) Gilpin. He graduated from Grand Island High School in 1957. He went on to attend and graduate from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering. Whether the football team was having a good year or not, he remained a committed Cornhusker fan for life. He became a father in 1965 and raised four beautiful daughters. He married his wife, Glenda (Humbert), in 1991.

Gary spent much of his life as a public servant and church leader, beginning with his involvement in his local Jaycees chapter, focusing on civic involvement and community service. He served as councilman and then mayor of Brighton, Colorado in the early 1980s. For the last sixteen years, Gary was the District Lay Servant Director of OK UMC. He was also honored to serve the Rushing Wind Emmaus Community.

He believed firmly in loving God, loving others, and taking up the cross daily. He was a long-time member of Hooker United Methodist Church and was active in Alcoholics Anonymous for thirty years. In addition to his distinguished service to the community, Gary was a skilled architect and pen and ink artist. In his spare time, he loved cooking, gardening, studying the Bible, and playing with his three cats, Rachel, Sherlock, and Cali. He loved the great outdoors, especially camping, hunting, fishing, and photographing his surroundings.

Gary is remembered as a humorous, quick-witted, loving, and compassionate husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was best known for bringing smiles, laughter, and joy to others. Gary is survived by his wife, Glenda; his daughters, Michelle Cupps (Randy), Nicole Gilpin Lynch (Tom), Noelle Albo (Rodney), and Gina Wilson (Heath); and his brother, Craig (Gilpin). His grandchildren are Ashlee, Heather, Craig, Lance, Kayla, Tyler, Jordan, and Spencer. His great grandchildren are Titan, Athena, Kysyn, AnaLynah, Weston, Liam, Rian, and Jaidyn.

A celebration of his life will be held at Hooker United Methodist Church in Hooker, Oklahoma on October 19, 2020 at 4:00pm with Rev. David Mingus officiating.
