Vern A. Hecox 78, of Tyrone, Oklahoma passed away June 27, 2010 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas.
Vern Allen Hecox, the youngest child of Glen Edwin Hecox and Erna May (Plunkett) Hecox, was born July 28, 1931 in rural Tyrone, Oklahoma. Vern went to school in Tyrone from 1st grade through 12th grade. He graduated from Tyrone High School in 1950 and attended one semester at Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas. After the death of his father, Glen, in November 1950, Vern dropped out of college to come home and take over the farming operation. He farmed for 50 years and was a Dekalb seed dealer for 29 years. Employment in addition to farming included Beech Aircraft, Ideal Warehouse, and carpentry. Vern served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in June 1956.
Vern married Myrna Irene McGugin January 29, 1955, in Clayton, New Mexico. Their three children include Steve, Colleen, and Scott. Vern was of the old school his word and a handshake were his bond. He was friendly, was a hugger, and had a million-dollar smile. He liked to tease and had a nickname for almost everyone and called his wife Sweet Thing. He was a charter member of the Tyrone Booster Club, served on the Tyrone Board of Education, and was instrumental in the establishment of a Little League baseball organization in Tyrone. He was one of the coaches during the years when his two sons, Steve and Scott, were involved in Little League. Vern attended the Tyrone United Methodist Church where he held various positions of leadership including Sunday School Superintendent and the Board of Trustees. He and Irene were sponsors for the United Methodist Youth Fellowship for several years. He loved the Lord, his family, watching his two sons play any kind of sports, and listening to his daughter sing and play the piano. He learned to snow ski in 1978 and enjoyed the mountains and being on the slopes. Vern was an avid sportsman and liked watching Seward County Community College/Area Technical School athletic events as well as Oklahoma University sports. When his health permitted he looked forward to morning and afternoon coffee time with his friends.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Helen L. Smith and Vera J. Cargill, one brother, Raymond L, Hecox one niece, Glenda M. Gramling and one nephew, Kirk A. Hecox.
Survivors include his wife, Irene, son Steve Hecox and wife Vicki, Liberal, Kansas, daughter, Colleen Pelz and husband Randy, The Villages, Florida, and son Scott Hecox and wife Elizabeth, Norman, Oklahoma. Seven grandchildren; Colby Hecox and wife Kayla. Blanchard, Oklahoma, Shane Hecox and wife Hilarie, Buhler, Kansas, Andy Millett, Tallahassee, Florida, Marcy Millett, St. Petersburg, Florida, Matt Hecox, Lukas Hecox and Marcus Hecox, Norman, Oklahoma and four great grandchildren, Henry, Hattie, Halle and Dax.
Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2010 at Trinity Faith Church in Liberal, Kansas. Crematory disposition will follow the memorial service directed by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. in Hooker, Oklahoma.
