Roy Lee Smothermon, 78, of Hooker, Oklahoma passed away January 9, 2011 at Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon, Oklahoma. The son of Archie Roy and Clara Mae (Packebush) Smothermon, he was born October 5, 1932, in Hooker, Oklahoma. Roy was united in marriage to Doris Mae Spence on September 14, 1950 in the home of Archie and Clara Smothermon in Hooker, Oklahoma. He graduated from Hooker High School with the class of 1950. He was employed by Tri-County Electric from 1952-1958. He worked until 1978 for CJ Hammack and Albert Herbel when they opened the Hooker TV Cable. He opened Roys Service in 1978 and found himself hired out all the time. He completed a correspondence course between work to obtain his electrical license and became adept at all kinds of small motors to huge systems. Whenever someone, especially those without a handyman in the family, need a task done, its Roy Lee they call. From the garage door wont go up, to theres a smell under the house and I dont know what it is, Roy Lee answered with a smile. Roy Lee has done much more for this community than take care of our problems, odds and ends. He performed in community programs always willing to bring on the smiles and laughter; and he is a very involved member of the First Christian Church. After Doris death, he married Velma Kingsland June 23, 2000 and the two remained active. He first attended a senior citizen dance in Guymon in 1999 where he met Velma Kingsland. They enjoyed many swirls since. He continued to do the two-step with Velma even through the News Year dance in Hugoton, Kansas December 31, 2010. Roy Lee was a board member for the Texas County Council for Senior Concerns; a member of the Guymon Toastmasters Club; and a member of the Hooker and Guymon Senior Citizens. He faced life threatening situations but always came back stronger and more willing to serve. His smile and his energetic hands were a blessing to his family and his community. He was preceded in death by his parents Archie and Clara Smothermon, his sister Evelyn Mae, two brothers Archie Lavern Smothermon and David Smothermon, and his wife Doris Mae Smothermon. He is survived by his loving wife Velma Smothermon of the home, sisters-Phennie Brown of Hooker Oklahoma, Shirley Johnson and husband Harvey of Guymon, Oklahoma, son-Roy Henry Smothermon and wife Sue of Edwardsburg Michigan, daughter-Patricia Mae Houpt and husband Calvin of Hooker, Oklahoma, Mike and wife Charlott Kingsland of Goodwell, Oklahoma, Pat Kingsland of San Diego, California, Penny Hawkins and her husband Larry of Cabot Arkansas and Glenn Kingsland of Hooker. Grandchildren Irene and Bart Blackwelder of Hooker Oklahoma, Mikel and Beckie Smothermon of Florence Arizona Tiffany and Craig Bernhardt of Julesburg, Colorado, Megin and Robert Adams of Alvarado, Texas, Nicole Smothermon of Edwardsburg Michigan, Heather Smothermon of Edwardsburg Michigan, Piper Kingsland and wife Kathy of Guymon Oklahoma, Paige James Kingsland of Oklahoma City Oklahoma, Kellie Moyer of Bixby Oklahoma, Ashley Kingsland of San Diego, California, Jacob Hawkins of Cabot Arkansas, Callie Hawkins of Cabot Arkansas ; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He will be sorely missed by friends and community. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Hooker with Rev. Dr. David Hoffman officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery directed by the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. in Hooker, Oklahoma. Memorials are suggested to the Senior Citizens Centers at Hooker or Guymon and may be left at Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, Ok 73945.
