James Flanagan Obituary

James Tex Flanagan, 89, passed away October 18, 2010 at Baptist St. Anthony Hospice in Amarillo, TX.
James was born to John Wylie & Lilla Parker Flanagan on August 22, 1921 in Grandview, TX. James attended college in Goodwell, OK at PAMC from 1939-41. He joined the Army Air Corp in July, 1941, and served in England with the 8th Air Force from 1942-43. At the age of 21, he was training pilots in North Carolina & training glider pilots in Lubbock,TX. He joined General Hutchinson's task force to the Philippines with Gen. MacArthur's Flying P61 Fighters. After his discharge in 1945, he graduated from PAMC in 1946.
James married Florence Clark in January, 1946 & they moved to Hooker, OK in 1947, where James taught math & was a coach for basketball/football for 4 years. He also played town team baseball for the Hooker Cardinals & pitched a no-hitter.
James worked for Westhoma Oil Co. from 1955-1993. He also served as a volunteer fireman, helped build the little league ballpark & served as a city councilman.
James was a member for over 50 years of the Masonic Lodge & the American Legion post.
During the 80's, James was instrumental in establishing the Frank Parkes Foundation, which has donated to the local school systems, baseball park, community center, senior citizens center & improvements to the Hooker golf course.
James was preceded in death by his son - James W. Flanagan, his two brothers J.W. & Ray, & two of his sisters Marie Pate & Johnye Melton.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years - Florence of Amarillo, TX; daughter Alice of Amarillo, TX; daughter Trish & son-in-law Randy Lewallen of Elk City, Ok.; the very proud PaPa of Elizabeth Lewallen of Oklahoma City,OK & P J Lewallen of Weatherford, OK.; a sister Jeanne Anderson of Arlington, TX; along with numerous nieces & nephews.
Graveside services will be Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Hooker Cemetery, and following the family will be hosting a remembrance reception at 3:00pm at the fellowship hall of the Hooker United Methodist Church. The family suggests donations to the Hooker American Legion Post or the Hooker Golf Course and may be left at Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, Oklahoma, 73945.
