George Robert Merritt, 86, of Hooker, Oklahoma passed away January 8, 2011 in Hooker, Oklahoma.
George was born July 10, 1924 in Washington, Kansas, the son of Noah Gilbert and Jessie Mildred McClaughry Merritt. He attended rural school in the area and as a young man worked with Parsons Construction on the US Military Arsenal.
During WWII, George entered the US Marine Corp serving in the South Pacific. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Fairbury then later Lincoln, Nebraska where he drove truck.
While driving in the Omaha area he met Ilene Augustine, they were united in marriage April 18, 1959 in Wahoo, Nebraska. They made their first home in Millard, Nebraska.
George drove for Watson Brothers for seventeen years and United Buckingham and they moved to South Dakota. He then drove for Ringsby living in Cheyenne, Wyoming. When Ringsby closed their doors, George received a call from Yellow Freight in Liberal, Kansas, they lived in Hooker, Oklahoma beginning in Dec. of 1976 and he retired in 1989.
George was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hooker, the American Legion in Hooker and the Hooker Senior Citizens. He loved to play games, enjoyed dominoes at the Hooker Senior Citizens and had managed bingo at the American Legion on Saturdays. George and Ilene enjoyed traveling to many places across the country.
George is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles.
Survivors include his wife Ilene of the home; one son, Douglas Wayne of Bogot, Columbia, South America; one daughter, Tamara Arnold and her husband Mike of Hooker, Oklahoma; three brothers, Harold of St. Marys, Kansas, Myrl and his wife Pat of Linn, Kansas, Richard and his wife Kathy of Hays, Kansas; one sister, Carolyn Pruser of Champagne, Illinois; four grandchildren, Jacob and Clint Arnold, Amanda Rasmussen and Tanner Merritt; three great grandchildren, Mason Arnold, Amilia and Jennifer Rasmussen.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donors choice.
Memorials services will be Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hooker, Oklahoma with Rev. Les Bussell officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
