Carl L. Gilbert, 81, of Hooker, Oklahoma passed away September 2, 2010 at Baptist St. Anthony Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. Carl was born August 12, 1929 in Liberal, Kansas, the son of George and Emma Neeal Gilbert. He was raised on the family farm south of Adams. Carl attended Adams schools graduating from Adams High School with the Class of 1949. He worked on the family ranch until he started professional roping on the RCA circuit from 1956 until 1959. In 1959 his brother Frank and he went to rodeos riding Roman Teams that jumped a 1957 convertible car. He also clowned and entertained with the bullwhip until 1963. On June 24, 1964 in Hooker, Oklahoma Carl was united in marriage to Betty Ann Hanson. Betty passed away December 10, 2000. In 1977 he began roping again and training race horses which he raced until 1985. He worked oil rigs welding pipelines also custom cut and hauled hay. Carl ran a branding crew for Pride Feeders and he welded most of the pens at Pride. He then worked for Texas County for nineteen years retiring in 2004. Carl and Ellen ran the Mid Continent Restaurant in Liberal, Kansas for 2 years until Ellens health caused them to retire. Carl never missed any Senior Dances in the area and he was a man who helped all who needed him. Preceding him in death was his parents, his wife Betty, of 35 years and his brother Frank. Survivors include his two sons, James Gilbert of Des Plaines, Illinois and Mike Wiley and his wife Ann of Norman, Oklahoma; brother, Lewis Gilbert of Hardesty, Oklahoma; five grandchildren Kevin, Erin, Thomas, Felicia and Ryan; and in 2001, Ellen Munro of Hooker, joined their hearts. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at the Gospel of Grace Church in Hooker with Rev. Odie Nunley officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery directed by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. in Hooker, Oklahoma. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association and may be left at Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, Oklahoma 73945.
